Mission Venus

Is there life beyond Earth? No one knows. Then how do we find it?

Scientists at NASA are working hard to find us an answer to this cosmic question.

Earth’s planetary neighbour and the second planet from the Sun, Venus, has always been considered inhospitable. However, it is named the Earth’s twin because it resembles Earth in size and surface composition.

However, Venus’ atmosphere is quite different from the Earth. It is also the hottest planet in the solar system.

Recently, NASA announced two missions to explore Venus. The missions will be launched between 2028 and 2030.

Let’s find out more about these missions:

The first mission is called the DAVINCI+ mission

  • It stands for Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry and Imaging.
  • It will study Venus’ atmosphere

VERITAS is the name of the second mission.

  • VERITAS stands for Venus Emissivity, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography and Spectroscopy.
  • It will study Venusian geology.

The primary aim of these missions is to understand how the planet formed and why it developed so differently from Earth.

If these two sister missions go well, we will probably know how Venus got so hot despite being in the Goldilocks Zone.

The Plant that Glows in the Dark

Have you wondered why do you see a bluish glow in the coastal waters at night? If you walk by the beach at night and see a shining light, it is probably due to the result of a natural phenomenon known as bioluminescence.

Bioluminescence is the natural emission of light by a living organism produced by a chemical reaction.

We have read about animals, fungi, insects, fishes, etc., emitting light at night. But recently, scientists were able to create plants that glow in the dark

How did they create these glow-in-the-dark plants?

Scientists harnessed the ability of mushrooms to glow at night to engineer plants that give off a dim light. The DNA of those bioluminescent mushrooms was transferred into tobacco plants, making them glow.

This technology could be used to create flowers that can glow.

In newer experiments, scientists have also made the plants glow ten times brighter without damaging them.
