Did you know that the Hubble Space Telescope has already completed 31 years! It was launched on 24 April 1990 by NASA with contributions from the European Space Agency (ESA).
To celebrate this occasion, NASA released the image of a brilliant ‘celebrity star’ taken by Hubble.
This star, called AG Carinae, is one of the brightest stars seen in our galaxy. It is 70 times bigger and around 1 million times brighter than our own Sun. It is 20,000 light-years away from Earth.
AG Carinae is surrounded by a huge halo (ring) of gas and dust. The halo is about five light-years wide. This halo was created from the star’s eruptions over 10,000 years ago.
