National Library Day is celebrated every year on the 12th of August to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mr. S.R. Ranganathan, a mathematician and a university librarian.
He contributed greatly to the field of library science and is considered to be the father of library science in India.
Library science is the study of library management. This includes collection, classification, cataloging and preservation of books and other resources.
This day (12th August) celebrates the importance of libraries in public education and highlights the role of librarians in maintaining them.
A library is a repository of knowledge – a place loaded with books, periodicals, newspapers, manuscripts, e-reading materials and so on. Librarians play an important role in maintaining libraries.
Libraries offer a safe haven where people can think, learn, share and grow.
